The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame described Jimi Hendrix as “arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music.” And though his career was short— his mainstream career lasted less than a decade before his untimely death in 1970 at the age of 27—his impact was great, making him one of the most influential electric guitarists. The list of awards he received, during his lifetime and posthumously, is prodigious, and his performance at the Woodstock festival in New York 1969 is a significant contribution to the annals of music.

Montblanc is paying tribute to Hendrix in its latest Great Caracthers writing instrument collection, comprising three artist-inspired pens. Each is adorned with a tremolo bar-shaped pen clip, emphasizing the importance of the guitarist’s unforgettable “whammy” technique, and the fountain pens feature rhodium-coated gold nibs engraved with his likeness.

Montblanc Great Characters Jimi Hendrix LE99

The pen is inspired Hendrix’s habit of turning right-handed guitars around to play left-handed. So Montblanc’s designers conceptualized a pen wherein one must unscrew the barrel to expose the nib rather than the cap: what appears to be the cap top actually serves as the cone, and vice versa.

The cap top is composed of a skeletonized 18-karat white gold overlay carved with a peace sign and the Montblanc emblem to reveal the blue dome below. And the vivid lacquer ring beneath the dome is inspired by the hot pink headband Hendrix wore onstage at Woodstock, while “Woodstock” is imprinted around the top of the clip. The pen’s cream-color lacquer cap recalls the Fender Stratocaster guitar he played at the festival, while an engraved 18-karat white gold plaque features with the names of the songs from his famed Woodstock set.
